About this book
Sean Phillips is a middle-aged man, disfigured by an injury he gave himself when he was seventeen, who lives in near isolation in southern California. He has created an intricate game of mail-order role-playing called Trace Italian.
Two of his most dedicated players, a teenage couple, take the search for the Trace Italian into the real world, with a tragic outcome, and the girl's parents sue him. The story works backwards, from the present to Sean's youth, to find how he came to create the game. John Darnielle's debut novel.
