About this book

In the year 2500, a French journalist joins an expedition to a planet near Betelgeuse and finds a world ruled by intelligent apes, where humans are mute animals kept in cages and hunted for sport. Orangutans guard the sciences, chimpanzees do research, and gorillas do the hard work.

Captured, Ulysse Mérou wins the trust of two chimpanzee scientists, Zira and Cornelius, who try to prove that he can think. Pierre Boulle's 1963 novel is a satirical fable, with an ending that differs from the famous film.
